A student of Divine Step College, Lagos State, Oluwateniola Alao and that of Taidob College, Ogun State, Halimah Okoro have emerged first and second respectively in the national qualifying examination for this year’s edition of science competition organised by Interswitch group among secondary school students nationwide.
Oluwateniola, a 15-year-old and Halimah, also 15-year old scored 93 per cent and 92 per cent respectively in the examination to lead other 79 finalists from a total of 10,502 students who participated in the online examination nationwide and qualified for other stages of the competition.
The InterswitchSPAK National Science competition is an annual pan-African contest aimed at boosting the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects among secondary school students in the country.
This year’s edition is the third in the series.
The Group Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Interswitch, Cherry Eromosele, who made this disclosure in a statement to announce the release of the results, noted that up to 65 per cent of participating students are from private schools while the rest are from public schools and with almost half of both sides are from the South west states.
Eromosele said it was interesting to know that this year’s edition attracted high number of participants despite that the examination was held online due to COVID-19 pandemic.
She said: “This is an indication that Nigerian students and schools have adapted to the new normal of virtual learning and online classes as the practice in the developed countries.
She explained that the 81 finalists would now compete on television till they are reduced to the best three, who would then share N12.5 million in scholarship worth according to their positions.
She said while the overall winner would be awarded a five-year scholarship in any tertiary institution to the tune of N7.5 million and also entitled to one laptop, a plaque and monthly stipends throughout the duration of the scholarship, the first and second runners- up would be awarded a three-year scholarship, a laptop, a plaque and monthly stipends for the three years totalling N4 million and one year-long scholarship worth N1 million, a laptop, and a plaque, respectively.
She said the competition is part of the social intervention initiatives of the company towards production of quality science students for the future.
