Lagos: HURMA petitions Tinubu over murder of transporter

Published by

A Non-Governmental Organisation and anti-corruption group committed to equity and justice, the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA), has petitioned President Bola Tinubu and his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to seek justice for the murder of a transporter, Ajayi Michael by a powerful political figure in the State.

According to the petitionsigned by its Executive Director, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, the group is seeking immediate intervention from the presidency, in curbing the excesses of the accused and his group and ensuring a thorough investigation and prosecution.

While expressing deep concern about the safety and well-being of the Alimosho community, Isiak said concerns have been raised by the paramount ruler of the community, Chief Adedayo Badeyemo Oki (Baale of Oki Kingdom – Ilufemiloye 1), and residents regarding the violent actions of the mastermind and his group.

He said: “The mastermind, who is a prominent figure in Lagos, has been accused of terrorising landlords, shop owners, and other residents by imposing levies, fines, and inflicting physical harm. He claims to be the Baale and owner of all land in the area.

“Despite widespread complaints and calls for action, the government and law enforcement agencies appear to be unable to hold him accountable.

“On April 16, 2024, he led a group of armed thugs to attack members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at Iyana Ipaja branch. This attack resulted in the death of Ajayi Michael and injuries to others.

“The police have arrested and released key individuals involved, including him, the local council chairman, and others. However, no substantial actions have been taken to pursue justice for the deceased and his family.”

HURMA noted that the mastermind’s ongoing criminal activities, including a pending case for forgery, perjury, and impersonation in a Lagos court, highlight the urgent need for intervention.

“We respectfully request your immediate action to ensure that justice is served for Ajayi Michael and his family. Your leadership is crucial in curbing the excesses of this nan and his group and ensuring a thorough investigation and prosecution.

“Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. We trust that you will use your influence and authority to see that justice is done,” he said.
