Lagos govt seals building over lack of toilet in Agege

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed off a residential building in the Agege area due to lack of toilet facilities, raising concerns over public health and sanitation standards.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the action on his X handle on Friday, describing it as part of the state’s drive for environmental sustainability and improved sanitation practices.

“LSWMO, in continued demonstration of its commitment to a sustainable environment, proper sanitation, and public health safety in the state, has sealed off a residential property on Adedosu Street, Otubu, Agege,” Wahab stated. “This was following the receipt of a public complaint from concerned residents.”

The bungalow in question reportedly comprises more than 10 rooms with no toilet facilities. Instead, it relies on deteriorated pit latrines filled with exposed faecal matter.

The commissioner applauded Adefemi Afolabi, the LSWMO General Manager, and his compliance team for their prompt intervention. Highlighting the health risks posed by the property, Wahab said the government remains vigilant against potential cholera outbreaks and similar health threats linked to inadequate sanitation.

“Citizens are further advised to embrace proper sanitation and hygiene practices to enhance public health and environmental sustainability,” he added, urging Lagosians to prioritise cleanliness for the safety of all.
