Lagos govt investigates Indian School for denying admission to Nigerians

The Lagos State government has ordered an investigation into an Indian school in Ilupeju for denying admissions to Nigerians, following reports of Nigerians being denied entry to the school.

Responding to a social media post by @DejiAdesogan addressing discrimination at an Abuja-based Chinese store, a user named @decommonroom shared their experience concerning the Indian Language School. According to them, “The Indian school in Ilupeju only admits Indians. You need an Indian passport for enrollment.”

However, In an interview with PUNCH, Gerald Katchy, an activist and General Secretary of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, emphasised the severity of discrimination, citing various international and national treaties, including the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.

He stated that discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, or other factors is a clear violation of fundamental rights.

In response to the situation, Gbenga Omotosho, the Lagos Commissioner for Information and Strategy, assured that the Ministry of Education would be informed and a thorough investigation conducted.

He reiterated the state government’s stance against all forms of discrimination, emphasising Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to inclusivity and fairness.

Omotosho said, “The Lagos State government frowns at any form of discrimination in whatever guise or disguise. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is in the second term of his administration and in everything he has done, he has not discriminated against anybody irrespective of religion, colour or affiliation. I’m not sure the ministry of education has gotten a complaint from anybody but if what you’re saying is true, it is not in our character.”

Omotosho added, “The ministry of education will investigate the matter.”
