The lack of mentorship leading to leadership roles has been described as the bane of quality generational leaders in Nigeria.
A life coach, Abidemi Adeyemi, made this declaration while speaking at the second edition of her “Mentors Moment,” which was held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Adeyemi noted that leadership without mentorship creates a brain drain in the leadership ladder, thus limiting growth and continuity in governance and other spheres of life.
She emphasised that most Nigerian leaders have neglected mentorship duties, but choose to hand over leadership roles to their children without the necessary quality training.
“Most of our good leaders need to start mentoring others to take over from them and not necessarily handing over to their children.
“The future of Nigeria lies greatly in the youth of today and as such good mentorship is necessary to guide them into leadership roles.
“An unprepared leader cannot change the dynamics of leadership overnight. The wealth of experience from these aged good leaders is the very tonic needed by the younger generation.
“We must go back to our values where our forebears lead and train those behind them to take over,” she added.
Meanwhile, a participant at the event, Oyinkansola Bada, lauded the initiative, saying that generational baton exchange is the most sought after by youths, just as mentorship is key.
