Labourer, 27, docked for allegedly attacking policeman with cutlass

A 27-year-old labourer, Ibrahim Ya’u, on Wednesday appeared before a Wuse Zone 6 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja for allegedly attacking a police corporal with a cutlass and injuring him.

Ya’u, who resides at Wumba village, Apo, Abuja is standing trial on a one-count charge of causing grievous hurt without provocation.

The prosecution counsel, Mr Donatus Abah told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Aug. 21.

He alleged that on the same date, the victim’s wife, Mrs Rosemary Omafu lodged the complaint at the Apo police station, Abuja.

According to Abah, the defendant attacked the victim, Cpl. Victor Omafu with a cutlass without provocation and inflicted injuries on him.

He further said that due to the serious degree of injuries Omafu sustained, especially on his face, he had to be rushed to a nearby hospital where he spent N67,000 on treatment.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 247 of the penal code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Mr Ahmed Ayeomoni granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with a surety in like sum.

He said the surety must provide evidence of one-year tax clearance as part of the bail condition and adjourned the case till Oct. 7, for hearing.
