The leadership of the Labour Party aligned with the Julius Abure faction has reacted to the recognition of the Nenadi Usman-led group by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that the development will not derail the party’s preparations for the 2027 general election.
The faction maintained that the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, as well as INEC’s removal of its executives’ names from the commission’s portal, would be challenged and overturned at the appellate Court.
It expressed confidence that the ruling of the lower court would be quashed on appeal.

In a statement issued Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party warned Nigerians against what it described as the strangulation and monetisation of democracy by a few power-seeking individuals, cautioning that unchecked political ambitions could push the country towards instability.
The Abure’s camp said some individuals celebrating recent developments should reflect deeply, noting that similar applause for perceived injustices in the past later resulted in widespread abuse of power.
The statement urged party members to remain calm, assuring them that the leadership was confident in the judicial process and would continue what he described as the struggle to free the party from godfatherism.
Ifoh further stated that the Labour Party is founded on the principles of social democracy, stressing that its ideology does not permit the concentration of power in the hands of one individual.
According to him, the appointment of party executives from the national to the ward level by a single person runs contrary to the party’s constitution and democratic ideals.
The statement described the celebration by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Nenadi Usman and their supporters over the appearance of their names on the INEC portal as premature, adding that such recognition would be short-lived. The faction insisted that the appointment of the caretaker committee did not follow due process, alleging that proper notice was not given in line with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
The Abure’s camp reaffirmed its resolve to pursue all legal options to reclaim what it described as the rightful leadership of the party and ensure a strong showing in the 2027 elections.
