Public school teachers in Kwara state, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), have asked Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to approve the implementation of their “age-long pending demands” to prevent industrial strike action.
In a letter, dated September 10, 2025 and signed by the state chairman of the NUT, Comrade Yusuf Agboola and the deputy secretary-general, MONI Mike Modesty Itua, the teachers demand implementation of the 27.5per cent and 21per cent Teachers Specific Allowances (TSA) “without any form of adulteration”.
“Your Excellency Sir, on behalf of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State Wing, we hereby forward to you a copy of the Union’s PRESS RELEASE of September 9, 2025 (as attached to this correspondence) regarding some age-long pending demands of teachers in the state and respectfully urge you to use your good offices in approving the implementation of the said demands of the Union, especially as having to do with 27.5% and 21% Teachers Specific Allowances (TSA), respectively, (without any form of adulteration); and in order to continue to maintain industrial peace, as well as sustain the harmonious working relationship between government and the public schools teachers in the state.
“The Union and her teeming members count much on Your Excellency, to urgently do the needful; so that a stitch in time will save nine!”.
The letter was copied to the Speaker, Kwara state House of Assembly, the chairman, House Committee on Education, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), the Head of Service (HoS), the state commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, the State Controller, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the executive chairman, Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB), the SSA (Labour), the executive chairman, Kwara State Teaching Service Commission (KWTESCOM), the state chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the secretary general, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Abuja.
It is recalled that teachers in Kwara state on Tuesday said that they have resolved to declare a day of fasting and prayer in supplication to God for divine intervention to ensure realization of their pending demands from the state government.
In a statement, with reference number: NUT/KWSW/PRESS/067/VOL.1/16, issued by the state chairman of the Nigeria Union Teachers (NUT), Comrade Yusuf Wahab Agboola, and the deputy secretary general, MONI Mike Modesty Itua, the teachers said that they resolved to seek divine intervention after a stakeholders meeting, adding that they would go ahead to issue a formal ultimatum to the state government in preparation for a legitimate showdown.
The union, who did not state particular date the fasting and prayers would hold, called on all its members to remain calm while awaiting further necessary directives.
The teachers also dissociated themselves from social media publications calling out public schools teachers in the state for a protest against the union and the state government, “consequent upon the non-realization of some pending teachers’ demands from government”.
The statement also decried alleged graveyard silence of the state government on the 27.5% and 21% Teachers Specific Allowances (TSA), “despite all the genuine efforts made by the union to get the government to do the needful”.
“The attention of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Kwara State Wing has been drawn to social media publications calling out public schools teachers in the State for a protest against the union and the state government, consequent upon the non-realization of some pending
teachers’ demands from the government.
“Arising from the above, the state leadership of the union, today the September 9, 2025 at a meeting with aggrieved critical internal stakeholders, brainstormed on all issues as well as steps and actions taken so far.
“It was resolved that before a formal ultimatum is given to the State Government in preparation for a legitimate showdown, a day of fasting and prayer by all teachers in the State, shall be declared by the State NUT in supplication to God for Divine interventions”.
