A local farmer in Kwara State has lost three of his children after eating a meal produced from yam powder ‘amala’ resulting in food poisoning.
The incident which happened in Ilorin East Local Government Area of the state involved five siblings of the same parents.
It was gathered that the five children were rushed to the children’s specialist hospital located at Centre Igboro area of Ilorin metropolis when they complained of discomfort after eating the food. Three of them later died from the incident suspected to be food poisoning, a source in the area said.
This is coming just about a month after two similar incidents of suspected food poisoning in Baruten and Kaiama communities of Kwara North that claimed 17 lives.
The Kwara State Disease Surveillance Notification Officer (DSNO), Alhaji Muhammad Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident, said that the two survivors had been discharged.
“When we got to the place, their father told us that five of his children ate the amala meal but three later started vomiting before they were rushed to the Children Specialist Hospital, Ilorin.
“He said while they were battling to save their lives, another one was rushed to another hospital but the first three died.
“Their father who is a farmer told us he produced the yam flour (Elubo) himself and cannot say what really happened,” he said.
The DSNO said the remaining two children were doing well “when we saw them yesterday” (Tuesday).
