Kogi govt urged to declare state of emergency in transport sector

Published by

The Executive Director of Conscience for Human Rights and Conflicts Resolution (CHRCR), Comrade Idris Miliki Abdul, has called on the Kogi State Government to declare a state of emergency in the transport sector.

Comrade Abdul, in a statement in Lokoja, said the call became imperative in view of the total collapse of the transport sector in the state, resulting in untold hardship for the people on a daily basis.

According to him, Kogi State shares boundaries with nine other states in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory, as investment in the sector cannot be a waste.

He noted that such investment will create employment, generate revenue, and provide services to the citizens.

He decried the situation where the transport sector is being left in the hands of the private sector, making the people helpless.

“The workers, the children, and several other citizens find it difficult to get to their place of work, even worship centres and business places. The situation is worrisome.”

The ED stressed that research has shown that an average of ten thousand vehicles pass through Kogi State, yet the state government doesn’t have a single vehicle in the commercial fleet, no airport, and the neglect of water transportation over the years since its creation 32 years ago.

He urged the government to give it the urgent attention needed to reduce the pains and agony parents, civil servants, school children, and others go through on a daily basis as well as give credence to the minimum wage being paid to workers.
