Killings: Bring perpetrators to justice, Human Rights Commission tells FG

THE National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the federal government to take necessary action within the confines of the law to ensure that those who are behind the current killings in the country are brought to justice without further delay.

The Executive Secretary of National Human Rights Commission, Barrister Tony Ojukwu made this call yesterday when he received members of the Women’s Situation Room Nigeria (WSRN) who were on a peaceful protest to the Commission.

The Commission’s Chief Executive Officer said that curbing the current killings in the country will not only reinforce citizen’s confidence in the ability of the government to protect their rights but will also pave the way for a peaceful environment that will guarantee good governance.

The National Human Rights Commission boss called for a restructuring of the nation’s security architecture in such a way that authorities of the Police are decentralised to cater for the peculiar security needs of various areas.

He told the group that the Commission would not relent in its sustained advocacy to the federal government on the need to mandate the Police and other security agencies to carry out their duties diligently or face sanctions.

Earlier, the National Coordinator, WSRN, Joy Onyesoh called on the Commission to ensure that those who perpetrated the killings in the country are not allowed to escape justice.

She also urged the federal government to stop the killings and provide holistic support to the affected families and survivors.
