Two members of the Odigbo Community in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State were killed by a vehicle on Wednesday evening, while one other was seriously injured in the accident.
The death of the two victims, Samani Uba and Fedebi Ayodeji, who were hit by a Land Rover Jeep however led to a protest by the people and residents of the Odigbo community, causing traffic gridlock on the ever busy Ondo-Ore road for more than eight hours.
Member of the community blocked the Ondo-Ore Expressway, alleging the driver of the Land Rover Jeep with registration number, FEA 162 AA of over speeding within the town which led to the death of the two men who were on motorcycle.
It was gathered that the driver of the vehicle who was over speeding lost control of the vehicle, while trying to avoid entering a pothole on the road and swerved off its lane where the two deceased and their motorcycle was hit as the driver of the jeep.
According to an eyewitness, who explained that the driver of the Jeep after killing the two men tried to escape the scene of the accident and hit another motorcycle carrying two people on the other side before he was stopped.
The source said the two men died on the spot while the third persons who sustained serious injury was rushed to a hospital for treatment, saying the people of the town were irked by the action of the driver who tried to run away after hitting the two victims.
The protesters barricaded the busy expressway, insisting that government must erect speed breakers on the road to reduce the speed of the vehicles, while motorists were turned back and were forced to take alternative routes to their various destinations.
The drivers of the Jeep whose identity cannot be ascertained was said to have ran away from the scene to escape mob action but his vehicle has been tolled to the Odigbo Division Police Station.
The eyewitness explained that all efforts by the security agents to clear the road were unsuccessful as the residents vowed not to leave the road and would not allow any vehicle to pass the through the town until speed breakers were erected.
When contacted the Public Relations Officers of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident and said the command had commenced investigation on the matter.
He said: ” We have commenced investigation on the matter, the vehicle is with us but the driver has fled.” but said that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at a mortuary.”
