KEDCO set to commission 10MW power project

…announces state to be rolled out

Future Energies Africa (FEA), the core investor in Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), through its renewable energy development arm, Bagaja Renewables Limited, is set to commission a newly completed 500kWp (10MWp output capacity) mini-grid in Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State.

Making this known, the Head of Corporate Communication, Sani Bala Sani, in a statement, disclosed that the firm would also break ground for another 1MW mini-grid project in Hadejia, Jigawa State.

According to him, “The two milestone events are scheduled to hold in late August or early September 2025, adding that the Executive Governor of Jigawa State, His Excellency Malam Umar Namadi, [is] expected to lead both the commissioning and groundbreaking ceremonies.”

He then emphasised that “These projects stem from the strategic partnership between the Jigawa State Government and KEDCO, where the State Government’s investment in KEDCO was anchored on a shared vision to expand and improve electricity access across the State.”

“As a complementary measure to that investment, FEA committed to deploying a series of community-based mini-grids to strengthen electricity distribution, extend service to underserved areas, and improve reliability for households and businesses,” the statement reads in part.

Sani further added that the Kafin Hausa mini-grid, now completed and ready for commissioning, represents the first in a series of innovative projects that aim to provide stable electricity to all key cities in Jigawa.

The mini-grid project consists of a 500kWp solar-hybrid generation plant, a 350MVA backup diesel generator, a 3.5km 33kV distribution line, and supporting infrastructure as well as 500kV step-up and step-down transformers, he added.

“The power plant will supply power to existing distribution transformers across Kafin Hausa township including NEPA Office, Kofar Fada, Akarami, Bakin Kasuwa and Ashura Transformers,” he added.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director of FEA noted: “Jigawa State, under the leadership of His Excellency Mal Umar Namadi, has shown leadership by investing in its energy future.

“These mini-grid projects are a direct outcome of that vision, and they will bring reliable power, economic opportunities, and social benefits to the people of Jigawa. FEA, KEDCO, and Bagaja are proud to deliver on this partnership.”

“The Executive Governor’s participation in these landmark events will underscore Jigawa’s pioneering role in advancing energy access through public-private partnership models that blend investment in distribution companies with targeted mini-grid deployment.

“Other mini-grids to be deployed by the JGSG, FEA, KEDCO partnership aside from Kafin Hausa and Hadejia include Ringim, Kazaure, Dutse, and Gumel.”
