Police authorities in Kamba town, Dandi LGA of Kebbi State, have arrested one Maryam Atiku, a 20-year-old woman who delivered a baby girl and buried her alive in a bush.
According to the police, Maryam tied her newborn baby with three pieces of wrapper around her neck, covered her mouth, carried the baby to Malam Yaro bush, dug a shallow hole, and buried the baby alive.
Fortunately, one Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad went to his farm located around Malam Yaro village. While on the farm, he observed a disturbed patch of soil resembling a fresh grave. He raised an alarm which attracted nearby people, who rushed to the scene and assisted him in exhuming the baby alive. The baby was later taken to the General Hospital, Kamba, where she received medical attention and was certified stable.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nafiu Abubakar, it was explained that upon receipt of the report, a team of detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Birnin Kebbi, swiftly swung into action and succeeded in arresting the suspect, who confessed to the crime.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Bello M. Sani, declared that his Command would wage a war of zero tolerance against any form of child abuse, exploitation, and all forms of gender-based violence in the state.
