The KB Klub at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the Oba Saheed Elegushi Foundation, has organised what it described as Lagos State’s largest blood donation drive.
The campaign, held on Friday, August 15, 2025, had the theme “Your Power to Gift Life 2.0.” According to the organisers, more than 500 pints of blood were collected across six local government areas (LGAs).
Donation centres were set up at the Monarch Event Centre in Eti-Osa, Tinubu Square on Lagos Island, Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, UNILAG Indoor Sports Centre on Lagos Mainland, Jara Mall in Ikeja, and Ikorodu General Hospital.
Alongside the collection exercise, the Klub also carried out awareness walks and publicity activities aimed at encouraging voluntary blood donation. Organisers estimate that more than one million people were reached through community engagement and online campaigns.
The flagship event at Eti-Osa was formally launched by the Elegushi of Ikate-Elegushi Kingdom, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi. Other officials present included Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS), Dr Bodunrin Osikomaiya; Senior Special Assistant to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Mrs Sarah Balogun; and Chief Executive of Next Haematology, Dr Folasade Popoola.
Also in attendance were Provost of the College of Medicine at UNILAG, Professor Ademola Oremosu, and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Health, Dr Toni Adeyemi.
The initiative was led by General Secretary of KB Klub, Sheriffdeen Oloyede, who served as project head. He was supported by President of the Klub, Ayobami Olomiyete; his predecessor, Mustapha Madehin, and other members.
This year’s drive surpassed the Klub’s inaugural effort in 2023, which recorded 402 pints of blood in a single day.
Organisers said the campaign was designed not only to increase the supply of blood but also to encourage Lagos residents to make voluntary donation a regular practice.
“KB Klub has reaffirmed its commitment to saving lives, and this event is just one example of how youth-led initiatives can catalyse change, build awareness, and ultimately, save lives,” the group said in a statement.
