Katsina State Government has distributed over three million tree seedlings to mitigate the effects of climate change across the state.
Governor Umar Dikko Radda, who disclosed this during the distribution and planting of 5,000 tree seedlings at Batagarawa Local Government Area, said the initiative was part of the administration’s commitment to environmental protection.
The programme was sponsored by a Non-Governmental Organisation, Sirajo Yakubu Foundation for Development.
Represented by the State Coordinator of AcRESAL, Yusha’u Shaun, Radda said the government had directed each local government chairman to plant at least 100 tree seedlings in their respective areas.
He added that seedlings would also be planted along ongoing road construction sites and around public buildings.
The governor commended the Sirajo Yakubu Foundation for the initiative, urging individuals and communities to cultivate the habit of planting and raising trees in their environments.
Earlier, the founder of the foundation, Dr. Sirajo Yakubu Batagarawa, said the distribution was meant to complement government efforts in tackling environmental challenges caused by climate change.
He explained that beyond environmental protection, the seedlings would also help generate income for residents.
“Since its creation, the foundation has introduced various programmes to assist orphans, support students, and create income-generating opportunities for the youth,” Yakubu said.
“Our focus is on tackling unemployment, addressing climate change, improving security, promoting education, and empowering young people,” he added.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Batagarawa Local Government, Yahaya Kawo, warned residents against rampant tree felling, pledging to partner with the foundation in environmental protection.
