… calls for stronger security, media ethics at congress meeting
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, has announced the suspension of its Secretary, Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, following allegations of administrative breaches and financial misappropriation.
The decision was reached on Saturday during the council’s second congress meeting held in Kano.
According to the communique issued at the end of the congress and signed by Council Chairman, Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi, and Acting Secretary, Hauwa Suleiman Zaharaddeen, the suspension is to allow for a thorough investigation by the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.
The congress also commended the Kano State Government for its continued investment in security, particularly the prioritisation of safety in the 2026 budget and the recent donation of vehicles and motorcycles to the Nigerian Army.
It, however, urged security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure a safer Kano.
On sports development, the union called for a complete overhaul of Kano Pillars Football Club to restore its organisational strength and preserve its legacy as one of Nigeria’s most successful football teams.
The NUJ further expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for guaranteeing press freedom and allowing journalists to operate without intimidation.
It also lauded the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, for establishing the League of Veteran Journalists and strengthening relationships among media practitioners.
On professional ethics, the union advised media executives and journalists to uphold high standards, particularly in translation, pronunciation of names, titles and places.
It warned journalists against content that glorifies banditry and urged strict adherence to the Nigeria Journalists’ Code of Ethics.
The congress also appealed to the State Fire Service to step up public sensitisation campaigns and preventive measures across communities.
Additionally, NUJ Kano applauded its leadership under Comrade Dederi for organising the 2025 Press Week in line with the union’s constitution.
It further acknowledged the Director-General, Media and Communications, to the Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, for offsetting the medical bills of veteran journalist Mallam Lawan Isah Bagwai and supporting other ailing members.
The communique was drafted by a committee chaired by Comrade Uba Abdullahi, with Abdullahi Muhammad as a member and Abbas Yusha’u Yusuf as secretary.
