The Chairman of the Gwale Herbal Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (TMP), Adamu Yusuf, has said that Karkare Herbal Medical Centre alone recorded over 500 cases of breast cancer within just seven months of this year, an increase he described as highly disturbing.
He then raised concern over the alarming rise in breast cancer cases among women in Kano State.
Yusuf made the disclosure during the annual enlightenment campaign on breast cancer, held on Saturday at the Kofar Nassarawa Cooperative Society Hall.
According to him, “The primary aim of the event was to sensitize women on early detection and encourage them to seek medical attention promptly.”
However, while tracing the history of the disease, he stated that breast cancer was once believed to be rare in Africa, particularly Nigeria about 30 years ago, with most cases previously diagnosed only in Western countries.
He noted with concern that the disease now affects all age groups, including newborns.
Yusuf attributed the rising number of cases to poverty, ignorance, and negligence and appealed to the government to support both victims and herbal centres across the state.
He also called on the medical personnel, herbal practitioners and relevant stakeholders to come together to tackle the growing spread of breast cancer.
Yusuf further disclosed that the Karkare Herbal Center had also treated over 10,900 patients with “Karkare” disease from January last year to date.
He assured the patients that both breast cancer and Karkare diseases are curable but advised them to report to the medical practitioners at an early stage.
Also speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Women Affairs, Rabi Adamu Hotoro, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting herbal medicine centres. She commended their efforts in promoting public health and pledged to forward their concerns to the governor.
