Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has enrolled inmates at the Goron Dutse Custodial Center into the state’s Basic Healthcare Scheme, following approval from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

This was just as 21 inmates were found to have symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis(TB.)

However, this was contained in a statement signed by Aminu Ahmad Turaki, the Public Relations Officer of KSCHMA on Wednesday, a copy made available to the press in Kano.

The statement, said the briefing held today by Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, disclosed that a total of 108 inmates were screened for TB, with 7 confirmed to have the disease.

“We are committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of all residents of Kano State, including those in custodial centres.

The healthcare needs of inmates are crucial to effective custodial management and their successful rehabilitation and reintegration into society,” Dr. Rahila stated.

Along with TB, the screening revealed other health concerns among the inmates.

Dr. Rahila also confirmed that 162 inmates had skin infections, including eczema, scabies, dermatitis, and impetigo.

Furthermore, five inmates were diagnosed with hypertension, three with diabetes, and one with osteoporosis.

Dr. Rahila confirmed; “All of these inmates are currently under treatment and medication at Goron Dutse Custodial Center, with support from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf through the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency”.

She added that the health and medical welfare of inmates is essential for efficient custodial management as well as effective reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration.

He therefore emphasised; “This initiative aligns with the Governor’s vision of achieving Universal Health Coverage for all residents of Kano”.
