A Kano magistrate court, presided over by Magistrate Auwalu Yusuf, has sentenced Ibrahim Abubakar to three months in prison for burning vehicle tires on the road.
This act was in violation of pollution control and public health laws.
The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, represented by its legal counsel, Barrister Bahijjah Aliyu, successfully prosecuted and secured the conviction of Abubakar for these offenses.
Abubakar was arrested by police patrol officers in the Tukuntawa Gidan Radio area for burning vehicle tires, which posed significant health risks to the public due to the toxic smoke emitted.
After residents lodged complaints, the Director of Pollution Control, Ibrahim Nasir, led an inspection team to the area, which resulted in filing the case in the Magistrate Court.
During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence that highlighted the serious harm caused by Abubakar’s actions. In delivering his judgment, Magistrate Yusuf convicted Abubakar and sentenced him to three months in prison or a fine.
The Magistrate cautioned the defendant against repeating such actions, emphasizing their detrimental impact on human health.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change commended the court’s decision and reiterated its commitment to protecting the environment and public health in Kano State.
They urge all residents to adhere strictly to environmental laws for the betterment of society.
