Kano CJ releases six long-term inmates in custodial centres

The Chief Judge of Kano State, Hon. Justice Dije Audu Aboki, during her official working visit to Kano Correctional Centres, ordered the release of six inmates who had spent the longest time in custody.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, CSC Musbahu Lawan Knassarawa, and made available to the press in Kano.

According to the statement, “The release was made due to the absence of active prosecution, lack of case files, and prolonged delays in their legal proceedings.”

Justice Aboki stressed that the decision was in line with her commitment to reforming and improving the administration of justice in Kano State.

She reiterated the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in the justice system, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, the Office of the Attorney General of the State, and the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The Chief Judge added that her goal is to ensure the timely dispensation of justice and reduce prolonged pre-trial detention.

She also urged the freed inmates to become responsible citizens by avoiding criminal activities and contributing positively to society.

Speaking at the event, the Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ado Inuwa, cautioned the released inmates to abide by the law and avoid actions that could return them to prison.

He further commended the Controller-General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Indidi Nwakuche, for his unwavering commitment to inmate welfare and rehabilitation, especially through skills acquisition programmes and educational opportunities designed to help inmates become self-reliant.
