Justice Odili
A human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana (SAN) has expressed dissatisfaction on slow pace of investigation on the recent illegal raid of the home of the Supreme Court Justice, Mary Odili.
He said now that the President is back in the country, after the multi country tour for official assignments on behalf of Nigeria, he would appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to set up an independent panel of inquiry to get to the root of the national embarrassment.
Falana shared this with the Channels television anchor on Thursday, during the morning show monitored by our correspondent.
“The President was away, now that he is back, some of us will appeal to the President to set up an independent inquiry, into the this unfortunate incident. It is very dangerous.
“It is an embarrassment for the country, that a gang of thugs can obtain a search warrant to subject a supreme court justice, the next in rank, to the chief justice of the country, to an illegal search and anything could have happened that night.
“That is why we have to put men to the root of these criminal exercise, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria said.”
On the status of the matter since the bungled raid on 29 October 2021 the Senior Advocate said “No nobody can be satisfied. I had warned in 2016 during the nocturnal raid on the homes of judges that we all have to raise against such incidents, because four judges were once killed in Ghana in the dead of the night, including a nursing mother.
So, I saw a danger in that kind of exercise, but we just moved on. With respect to Justice, Mary Odili, this is the second attack on her, in the last two years.
“Nobody protested last year, apart from a couple of us, when a band of thugs, invaded her house to protest her judgement. No! You do not do that. Only in a Banana Republic, will nocturnal elements invade the house of a judge! To disagree with her no!
“The government never said anything. Even the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), did not move against it. That encouraged this set of people.
“Twenty one of them, 14 have been arrested, we are now told that we cannot find seven, has anyone declare them wanted?
“We are being told that, it was a fake police officer that led them. The magistrate that issued the order, is he a fake Magistrate? The magistrate was clear, when he was revoking the order: I have been misled, by the recovery panel of the federal ministry of justice,” Falana said the magistrate openly declared.
“He never doubted where the came from. He granted the order but realized that it was an exercise in illegality and the magistrate now withdraw the order.
“In revoking the search warrant, the magistrate said, ‘I have been mislead.’ That statement has not been challenged? And that statement speaks volumes of where the guys came from.
“One of them has said ‘I am a consultant to the attorney general, the attorney general has denied. That can not be the end of the matter. I think that is what the NBA is looking at.
“The police had not released the report of its investigation, which is still ongoing. What the police has released is that, we have caught 14 of them. We are still looking for seven of them including two soldiers,” Falana stated.
