President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate release of minors arrested and arraigned for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests.
This move follows widespread outrage after 72 minors were brought before a Federal High Court in Abuja on treason charges, with four collapsing in court due to exhaustion.
The President’s directive, announced by Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, ensures the minors’ release without prejudice to ongoing legal processes.
Additionally, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction will provide welfare support and facilitate reunions with their parents or guardians.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, held in August, aimed to address various socio-economic issues in Nigeria. However, the protests turned violent, leading to the arrest of 76 people, including minors, on charges of treason and inciting a military coup.
The Socio-Economic Rights & Accountability Project (SERAP) condemned the detention and arraignment of minors, stating that it was not in the “best interests of the child”.
Politicians like Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan also criticised the government’s actions, emphasising the need for accountability.
The Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, had requested the case file of the minors, indicating a review of the treasonable felony charges.
