June 12: Ogun Speaker Oluomo commends Buhari, NASS on redressing justice

Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo has commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the 8th National Assembly for redressing part of the “injustice committed by the military” in the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
This redressing, Oluomo said was the assent to the Public Holiday (Amendment) Bill by Buhari giving legal backing for the commemoration of June 12, as Democracy Day hitherto celebrated on May 29.
Oluomo, in a goodwill message to Nigerians, noted that President deserved to be applauded for remaining committed to national integrity, cohesion and democratic principles all aimed at building a nation devoid of injustice, tribal and sectional differences.
The Speaker described the president’s gesture as an affirmation that Bashorun Moshood Abiola’s victory at the1993 polls is undisputable.
Oluomo further assured that he will continue to protect democratic ideals that will engender good and credible governance for the benefit of the people of Ogun State.
While noting the supreme sacrifice paid by Abiola and other martyrs in the struggle for democracy, Oluomo added that the 9th legislature under his leadership would complement the efforts of the executive arm in the execution of policies and programmes geared towards improving the socio-economic wellbeing of the people.
Recall that President Buhari last year conferred Abiola with a posthumous national honour as the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR, the highest national honour in the country.
