Veteran Nollywood actress and university lecturer, Dr. Joke Muyiwa, has debunked reports alleging she admitted to losing her only child due to personal carelessness.
In an exclusive chat with Razzmatazz on Saturday, the celebrated actress described the claim as a distortion of her original statement and urged the public to disregard the misleading reports.
Dr. Muyiwa, who lectures in the Department of Performing Arts at Olabisi Onabanjo University and holds the traditional title of Yeye Asa of Ago Iwoye, clarified that she has a surviving son, Yomi, popularly known as Thespis, who currently resides in Canada.
Setting the record straight, she said, “I had Yomi as my first child, and he was already seven years old before I gave birth to Okikiayo, who sadly passed away in one year and two months.”
Reflecting on the tragic loss, Dr. Muyiwa admitted that her intense dedication to acting at the time affected her spiritual awareness.
“I was so overwhelmed with the joy and zeal of being a versatile actress that I was not cognisant of the spiritual state of my life.
“I cut Okikiayo’s hair because I wanted to take him along for a stage play by Wole Soyinka, Death and the King’s Horseman, in Lagos, to make him look good, without any spiritual consultation. He fell sick and died two weeks later,” she explained.
While acknowledging the loss as a deeply painful episode in her life, she reiterated that the reports misquoted her.
“They didn’t read or listen to me properly. I never said I had just one child. I tried to have another child after Okiki passed, but it didn’t happen. I accepted my fate and left everything to God,” she concluded
