Jigawa state governor, Umar Namadi has said that the ongoing construction of the N6.4 billion Gwaram Basirka Bridge is expected to boost trade and enhance connectivity between the North-West and North-East regions.
Making this known on Thursday in a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Media Affairs, Hajiya Zainab Ringim, a copy made available to pressmen in Kano, said the bridge is a strategic investment designed to facilitate the movement of goods and people, unlocking economic opportunities for local businesses and traders.
She then stated ” While Governor Namadi inspected the bridge on Tuesday during a stopover on his way to Gombe State, expressed satisfaction with the progress and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to timely completion.”
The statement reads: “With a total cost of N6.4 billion, the project is being executed by local contractor Ojeil Construction Company Limited, while Wuri Associate serves as the consultant.”
She disclosed that the project is currently at 24% completion, adding that despite challenges posed by the six-month contract duration, the governor remains optimistic about meeting the deadline.
According to her,” The Gwaram Basirka Bridge will serve as a major trade route, linking key markets across the North West and North East regions. This will improve access to essential goods and services while fostering economic integration between states.”
She emphasised that the project is part of the state government’s broader strategy to enhance infrastructure, with similar initiatives underway to upgrade roads, bridges, and other transport networks.
The aide emphasised that the bridge would not only ease travel but also attract investment, create job opportunities, and enhance overall economic activities in the region.
She also highlighted the administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that the governor’s oversight reflects his dedication to ensuring that public funds are efficiently utilised.
“As the project progresses, the state government will continue to provide updates, reinforcing its commitment to infrastructural development that directly benefits the people,” she said.
The Gwaram Basirka Bridge is expected to be a game-changer for trade and mobility, strengthening Jigawa’s role as a key economic hub in northern Nigeria.
