Jigawa tanker explosion: FG presents relief materials to victims

The Federal Government has presented relief materials worth millions of naira to the victims of the Jigawa petrol tanker explosion.

Presenting the items to the Jigawa state government, the chairman of the National Commission for Refugee, Migrant and Instantly Display Persons (NCFRMI), Tijjani Aliyu Ahmad said he and his entourage are in the state to commiserate with the government and people of Jigawa state over the last week petrol tanker explosion which claimed the lives of about 200, injured many and destroyed properties.

Ahmad noted that “We are here to express our deepest sympathy on behalf of the National Commission for Refugee, Migrant and Instantly Display Persons (NCFRMI) and the Federal Government regarding to tragic tanker incident occurred in Majiya of Taura local area in the state.

“Your Excellency this incidence in a real sense of it, has devastated the people of Jigawa state. And not only this one that just occured, we have been here earlier than now to come to the state for the flood disaster.

“As you are aware the National Commission for Refugee, Migrant and Instantly Display Persons (NCFRMI) is an agency of the federal government with the mandate to coordinate national actions for the protections, assistance and provisions of durable solutions to person of concern that is IDPs, refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, returnees and stateless persons.

“Our mandate to ensure durable solutions through returning to ancestral land, local Interventions or resettlement, supported by essential service like education, healthcare and livelihood.”

He disclosed further that “In line with president Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda which is central to our efforts to rebuild a stronger and more resilient Nigeria, NCFRMI is committed to ensuring peace and stability especially for persons of concern in Jigawa state through impactful intervention” .

The items presented includes 200 bags of 25k of Rice, 100 bags of 25k Millet, 200 cartons of Supaghety, 200 bags of Semovita, 5o cartons of Maggi.

Other items are robber mats, blankets, children wears, cooking oil, charcoal stoves and mattresses

In his response, the Jigawa state governor, Malam Umar Namadi constituted an independent committee for judicial distributions of the donated over N1.5 billion and food commodity to the families of 182 deceased and over 80 victims of the Majiya petrol tanker explosion.

Namadi explained that “as of today 182 people died and 78 people were receiving treatment in eight different hospitals within and outside the state.

“Record in the government disposal indicated that 210 families affected by the incident. Apart from the people in Majiya, there is some from nearby villages had been affected.

“The committee set off is chairing by the Taura local government area comprising the district heads, Imam and some trusted community people who were selected by the communities. This is to ensure judicial distributions of the donations collected for the victims.

“Our plan and effort is to ensure all the donations had been judicially shared to the victims in full quality.”

He, therefore, thanked President Bola Tinubu, the leader of the delegation and all the other individual, groups government and NGOs who commiserated with the state government.
