Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has commissioned a N1.2 billion solar-hybrid mini-grid independent power station in Kafin Hausa, his hometown.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Namadi described the project as a major step toward addressing power supply challenges and advancing renewable energy development in the state.
He noted that the Kafin Hausa Mini-Grid Power Project represents a significant milestone in Jigawa’s development journey, being the first of a planned 10MW of solar-hybrid mini-grids to be rolled out across the state.
According to him, “The project, executed by Bagaja Renewables, is part of efforts by KEDCO and Future Energies Africa to ensure sustainable improvements in power supply in Jigawa State. It is also part of several mini-grid power projects planned for rollout in the coming months through these collaborative efforts.”
Namadi explained that the initiative is part of the fulfillment of KEDCO’s obligations under the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Jigawa State Government when the state invested in the power distribution company.
“I truly believe today’s event is yet another milestone in our efforts to improve the socio-economic well-being of the people of Jigawa State,” he said.
The Kafin Hausa Mini-Grid consists of a 500 kWp solar-hybrid power plant, a 3.5 km 33 kV distribution line, step-up and step-down transformers, and other supporting infrastructure.
The governor disclosed that similar projects will be developed in Dutse, Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim, and Gumel.
He further highlighted that the project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which devolves the power sector and enables states to generate their own electricity.
“This partnership and collaboration with KEDCO allowed us to acquire a small stake in the ownership of the distribution company, which also required KEDCO to take actions aimed at boosting power supply in the state,” Namadi stated.
He recalled that Jigawa recently increased its shares in KEDCO from 7.5% to 10% as part of deliberate efforts to improve electricity supply across the state, adding that the commissioning of the Kafin Hausa project is one of the dividends of that investment.
Governor Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to positioning Jigawa as a leader in renewable energy reforms.
