No fewer than 28 people have been confirmed dead and over 6,000 families have been displaced due to severe flooding in Jigawa State.
This information was provided by Dr. Haruna Mairiga, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in an exclusive interview with Tribune Online.
Dr Mairiga reported that the flood has impacted four local government headquarters: Auyo, Buji, Jahun, and Miga.
The flooding has disrupted official activities, with local government secretariats becoming inaccessible.
The Executive Secretary revealed that the flood has displaced over 6,000 families across 13 affected local government areas.
The state government has established more than 20 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, while some victims are staying with relatives.
“Our agency has registered over 5,000 internally displaced persons in these camps, excluding nursing babies,” Dr. Mairiga said.
He noted that each local government area has at least one IDP camp, with some areas having up to three camps due to the severity of the situation. Many victims are currently housed in primary schools.
The government has provided essential supplies at the IDP camps, including drinking water, toilets, and mosquito nets.
