The Chairman of the Jigawa State chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Engr. Awwalu Garba Ibrahim has called on the Consumer Protection Committee (CPC) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to be more proactive in addressing the issue of fake and substandard fertiliser that has flooded markets in the state.
The Chairman made the call while speaking to newsmen shortly after the state executive council meeting at the Asmau House Building in Dutse.
He said that as a result of the current high cost of fertiliser, there have been reports of fake and substandard products flooding the markets.
Engr. Awwalu Garba Ibrahim explained that some unscrupulous elements, whether genuine manufacturers or counterfeiters, are taking advantage of the high prices and the ignorance of farmers to sell fake and low-quality fertiliser in the markets.
According to him, “We are calling on the Jigawa State Consumer Protection Committee and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to be more active and vigilant in fertiliser processing factories, markets, and stores to save farmers from these bad elements.”
The AFAN Chairman added that “the way they are labelling and packaging fake and poor-quality fertiliser makes it difficult, especially for our rural farmers, who form the majority in the farming business, to differentiate the good from the bad.”
He commended the Jigawa State Government for procuring fertiliser and selling it to farmers at a subsidised price.
“We are really impressed and happy with the commendable efforts of Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s administration in empowering civil servants with agricultural inputs and cash, in addition to the over 800 trucks of fertiliser in the first consignment being sold to farmers at over 50 per cent subsidy,” he said.
Engr. Awwalu Garba Ibrahim further congratulated the association and its national chairman, Dr. Faruk Mudi, for their victory in the Appeal Court, which has brought an end to the long-standing leadership legal battle.
“This development will give the association peace and strength to work in unity, improve the farming business, and protect the rights and privileges of its members,” he stated.
