Represented by his son and former Edo state Governor Lucky Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin tasked the Prof. Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah headed council to further enhance the development of the nation’s premier private university to another level.
He said that his expectation is for the institution to develop an elaborate and implementable strategic action policy and boldly interface with all the necessary and relevant people and institutions on behalf of the university in order to make it greater than they met it.
The chancellor added that in view of the current economic situation in the country, it was his hope that the seven-man council will drive policies to rekindle the entrepreneurial initiatives of the university and also strive to link it with industry, commerce and international organizations.
He tasked: “In this regard, the Governing Council of the university should pursue the realization of the prime philosophy, vision and mission of the university, while the day to day management of the university will be left in hands of the Vice-Chancellor and his management team.”
Speaking on behalf of the other council members, Abdullah pledged to put in focus the vision and mission of the university and the calling.
Abdullah, a former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria said that he understood the measure of responsibility that is upon the fifth council, noting that with the calibre of men and women in the fifth council, they will be able to accomplish the goals with the period of its assignment.
He added: “The challenges of the university are not farfetched from the challenges of the country. Most of our universities are underfunded and they have to build the purpose of the university in tandem with international best practices and that is what will be challenging us as a council.
“We will make sure that we source for funds from other international universities to come and help develop this university to international standard university that fixes into the dream of the founding fathers.”
Other members of the board are former minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, Senator Ben Obi, Prof. Abubakar Sambo, former Vice Chancellor of Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Prof. Yinka Omoregbe, Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Prof. Abiodun Illesanmi and Mrs. Cerelina Ojobo, a former Registrar of the University of Benin.
