IWD 2025: Ex-Senate president, Ebonyi gov’s wife celebrate women

Former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, and the Wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Mrs. Mary-Maudaline Nwifuru, have hailed the contributions of women to society, describing them as the backbone of homes, the economy, and the future.

In separate statements commemorating the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD), they emphasised the need for gender equality, empowerment, and the removal of barriers limiting women’s progress.

Mrs. Nwifuru, in a statement signed by her press secretary, Ms. Nnenna Oshibe, extended warm greetings to the remarkable women of Ebonyi State. She described women as the pillars of their homes, communities, and society, noting that their contributions continue to shape the future of the state and Nigeria.

“This year’s theme, Accelerate Action, serves as a powerful call for all of us to redouble our efforts in advancing gender equality, empowering women economically, and ensuring that their voices are heard in all spheres of life. The time for change is now, to uplift, support, and create more opportunities for women and girls,” she stated.

She reaffirmed her commitment to policies and initiatives that promote women’s empowerment, education, and economic inclusion in the state.

She also highlighted the achievements of Ebonyi State in advancing women’s rights, thanks to Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s leadership, which has led to increased access to education, economic empowerment programs, improved healthcare, and strong advocacy against gender-based violence.

“Every woman must be an agent of change at home, in the workplace, and in the community. The time for waiting is over,” she added.

Similarly, Anyim Pius Anyim, in a statement he personally signed, described women as the heartbeat of their homes and the architects of the future.

“Today, I celebrate the strength, resilience, and brilliance of every woman and girl in Nigeria and across the world. You are the heartbeat of our homes, the backbone of our economy, and the architects of our future.

“On this International Women’s Day, we do more than recognize your contributions—we commit to removing every barrier that holds you back,” he said.

Speaking on the IWD 2025 theme, Accelerate Action, Anyim stressed the need for immediate and bold steps toward gender equality.

“It is not enough to acknowledge gender inequality; we must dismantle it. It is not enough to admire women’s achievements; we must create more opportunities. It is not enough to condemn gender-based violence; we must eradicate it,” he said.

He pledged support for policies that protect women from violence, empower female entrepreneurs, expand educational access for girls, and make workplaces more inclusive.

“But this is more than policies—it is about changing mindsets and challenging the status quo. Every father must raise his daughter to believe she is limitless.

“Every brother must stand as a defender of his sister’s rights. Every husband must uplift his wife as an equal partner. When we lift women, we lift families. When we empower women, we empower nations,” he stated.

Both leaders urged governments, organisations, and individuals to take deliberate steps toward building a more inclusive and equitable society where every woman can achieve her full potential.

“Your voice matters, your dreams are valid, and your contributions are invaluable to the progress of our society. May you continue to shine and thrive in all that you do,” Mrs. Nwifuru added.
