Nigerian singer and songwriter, Chike Osebuka, popularly known as Chike, has dismissed marriage as unnecessary, describing it as a “stupid step.”
The 32-year-old artiste, who is well known for his soulful and love-inspired songs, made the comment during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo.
When asked about marriage, he explained that it is not something he considers important at this stage of his life.
“In my personal opinion, in fact, I think it’s a stupid step to get married, that’s my opinion,” he said.
Chike, whose music often centres on romance, explained that his personal fulfilment depends largely on financial security.
“For me to be happy, to be honest, I need a lot of money.
“This is not even canal, I won’t lie to you, I like money. I want money,” he added.
Speaking about his career path, he revealed that he only came to see music as a viable profession after completing his university studies.
“I would say maybe right after my university, I knew music was what I would do for a living.
“I won’t say I knew before, to be honest, because I just used to sing and disturb everybody around me,” he said.
The singer noted that his early years were marked by financial struggles, forcing him to take acting roles for two years to survive.
He added that his sudden rise in music even made his mother question whether he had joined a cult.
Chike also recounted how some of his friends turned away from him when he sought financial support to organise his first show.
“I remember one time when I was about to do my show, and how much does the entire show cost, I think N400,000, if not less, because a lot of things were favours.
“And I called the friends I used to hang out with and drink with and, I mean, not, I’m not a drinker, but people I have fun with, and I knew the answer was no.
“But I just thought that I deserved the respect of telling me that, oh, you don’t have it, or you can’t do it now, or, oh man, I just, I flat out don’t have it.

“And with some of them, they just stopped picking my calls, you know, they just stopped.
“And it was, you know, a female friend of mine still that I went to, and for the first time, you know.
“At least I was comfortable around her enough to let out a couple of emotions, and I remember I actually cried that day.
“And she just looked at me, and she was like, Chike, don’t worry, I’ll give you the money, just go and concentrate.
“And that was, that’s how I got the money, literally gave me the money,” he said.
