Joey Amor, the husband of Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, one of the United States service members killed in an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait, has revealed that his wife was just days away from returning home before the fatal attack.
Nicole Amor, 39, from White Bear Lake, Minnesota, died on Sunday when an Iranian drone struck Port Shuaiba, killing six American troops. She had been preparing to reunite with her husband and their two children.
“She was almost home,” her grief-stricken husband, Joey Amor, said Tuesday.
“You don’t go to Kuwait thinking something’s going to happen, and for her to be one of the first – it hurts.”
Joey Amor said he spoke to his wife hours before the strike. The couple exchanged text messages about how she had tripped and fallen the previous night.
“She just never responded in the morning,” he said.
Nicole Amor served with the Army Reserve’s 103rd Sustainment Command. She enlisted in the National Guard in 2005 as an automated logistics specialist and transferred to the Army Reserve in 2006. She had previously been deployed to Kuwait and Iraq.
In the Army Reserve, she worked in logistics, helping to keep troops supplied with food and equipment.
At home, she was known as an avid gardener who enjoyed making homemade salsa with vegetables from her garden with her son, a high school senior. She also loved rollerblading and bicycling with her fourth-grade daughter, according to her family.
Her death came one day after the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury strikes against Iran.
A week before the attack, she had been moved off-base to a shipping container-style building that had no defences, her husband said.
“They were dispersing because they were in fear that the base they were on was going to get attacked and they felt it was safer in smaller groups in separate places,” he said.
Those killed alongside her were Capt. Cody Khork, 35, of Winter Haven, Florida; Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens, 42, of Bellevue, Nebraska; and Sgt. Declan Coady, 20, of West Des Moines, Iowa.
The Pentagon has not yet released the names of the remaining two service members killed in the strike.
