IPAC to Kebbi govt: Conduct LG election or face legal action

The State Chairman of Inter Party Advisory Council, Nigeria (IPAC), Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad, has threatened that the council in Kebbi would institute legal action against the State government if it failed to conduct Local Government Areas elections across the State in six months.

Muhammad who handed down this warning while he and his members paid an advocacy visit to the office of Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission (KESIEC) in Birnin-Kebbi told the Chairman of the Commission that  their visit to the commission was to formally  complain of not conducting local government elections as the two years tenure of the elected council executives had expired.

He told the commission that, appointing sole administrators was unconstitutional and IPAC would not accept that as legal action would be taken if the commission failed to conduct election on or before 5th of June, 2024.

Responding, the Chairman Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission, (KBSEIC), Aliyu Muhammad Mera stated that non-release of funds by the state government has delayed the conduct of the local government elections across the state.

Represented by commissioner Ahmed Adamu Sani, he said that the commission had written to the state government six months before the expiration of the local government council tenure but no response from the government.

“Though we are Independent but don’t have the funds to conduct elections unless the government provide and the government has not given funds to conduct local government elections”.

While commending IPAC for the visit to forward their complaint to the commission, the Chairman, solicited their support and cooperation in finding ways for the government to conduct the local government elections.
