Today I wish everyone, men and women reading this a Happy International Women’s Day.

In the contemporary landscape, the quest for gender equality and the enhancement of women’s well-being across all facets of life have become more pressing than ever. This pursuit is not only pivotal for individual advancement but is also intrinsically linked to the creation of thriving economies and a sustainable planet. Despite these noble aspirations, an imposing obstacle looms before us: a staggering $360 billion annual deficit in gender equality measures projected by 2030.(UNwomen)

Now, let’s delve into the heart of the matter by spotlighting five critical areas that necessitate unified action:

Investing in women: Human Rights Imperative:

Investing in women transcends economic considerations; it is a pressing human rights issue. Time is of the essence, and gender equality emerges as the paramount human rights challenge, one that inherently benefits everyone. Our collective journey toward progress begins with recognizing and addressing this fundamental truth.

Poverty Alleviation:

The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with ongoing conflicts, has propelled an additional 75 million people into severe poverty since 2020. Urgent measures are indispensable to prevent over 342 million women and girls from teetering on the brink of poverty by 2030. The imperative to act now is not just an economic one; it is a moral obligation that defines our commitment to creating a fair and equitable world.

Gender-Responsive Financing:

The specter of conflicts and the escalation of prices cast a shadow over our future. If unchecked, 75% of countries are poised to slash public spending by 2025, a move that would disproportionately impact women and undermine essential services. The need of the hour is to implement gender-responsive financing strategies that not only safeguard women’s interests but also foster an inclusive and sustainable economic environment.

Green Economy and Care Society:

The prevailing economic system bears the imprint of gender bias, disproportionately disadvantageing women. Advocates for change propose a seismic shift towards a green economy and care society, emphasizing the need to amplify women’s voices and rectify systemic imbalances. It’s a call for a paradigm shift that acknowledges the interconnectedness of environmental sustainability and gender equity.

Support for Feminist Change-Makers:

Despite their pivotal contributions, feminist organizations receive a mere 0.13% of official development assistance. This staggering statistic underscores the need for broader recognition and enhanced support for these change-makers who, against the odds, strive to reshape societal norms and systems. Elevating their voices is not just a symbolic gesture; it is a tangible investment in a future where gender equality is the bedrock of progress.

Today I want us to visualize our collective journey through an animated narrative, symbolized by interconnected chain links, illustrating the strength that arises from unity.

In embracing the essence of International Women’s Day, let us not merely mark the occasion but actively unite to transform challenges into opportunities.

Our collective strength lies in envisioning and shaping a future where gender equality is not just a lofty ideal but an integral part of our societal fabric. As we advocate for the empowerment of women and the acceleration of progress, let our words echo with purpose and our actions resonate with a commitment to a better, more inclusive world. In a world where brevity often takes precedence, let our collective voice break the mold, paving the way for transformative change.
