The Nigerian Baptist Convention has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to convene a National Conference on Security with all former Presidents and Heads of State, as well as current and former security chiefs, to develop a new security blueprint for the country.
This call comes in response to the rising insecurity in Nigeria, marked by unprovoked killings, genocide, kidnapping, terror, and banditry attacks.
The convention’s president, Rev. Dr. Israel Akanji, made the call during a press conference in Lagos to flag off the 112th Annual Session of the church.
He emphasised that the current security situation is unacceptable and requires immediate attention.
Rev. Akanji also reiterated the convention’s stance on the need for State Police, citing the current policing system’s insufficiency in curbing insecurity.
He called on the judicial system and police to accelerate prosecution of those responsible for insecurity.
Furthermore, the convention urged President Tinubu to convene a National Conference of stakeholders in the power sector to address challenges and find permanent solutions. They commended President Tinubu’s economic reforms and urged him to continue implementing policies with a human face.
The convention also expressed concerns about the education sector, calling for a state of emergency to overhaul and restore normalcy.
They recommended overhauling curricula in tertiary institutions to produce employable and self-employed graduates.
In addition, Rev. Akanji appealed for more efforts to boost foreign investments and urged the leadership of the Civil Defence Corps to address the security threat to public schools and prevent further abductions.
“There is a parable of a Rich Fool in the Bible who was day dreaming of how to enjoy his wealth without considering God as his source. He finally he lost his life prematurely.
“Our politicians should focus more on the present sensitive economic hardship and the security challenges I just mentioned above. Whoever does his work well now needs not fear the coming 2027 elections. People’s work will speak for them.
“Our politicians need to learn from the incumbent President of Ghana, whose election I attended as an observer,” he added.
