The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed food and non-food items to more than 1,000 households affected by the recent Boko Haram attack on Darajamal, a border community in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
The intervention comes days after insurgents stormed the community on September 5, killing at least 61 people, including seven soldiers, and leaving many others wounded. Survivors were forced to flee with nothing after the attackers set homes, vehicles and food stores ablaze before retreating into the Sambisa forest.
The relief distribution, carried out by the NEDC Borno State office, was led by the State Coordinator, Mohammed Umar.
Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director/CEO, Mohammed Goni Alkali, he commiserated with the people of Darajamal, praying for the repose of the dead and quick recovery for the injured.
“This intervention reflects our mandate to stand with communities devastated by insurgency across the North-East,” Umar said.
Also addressing the gathering, Head of Branch Operations, Aishatu Mohammed Hassan, said the Commission remained committed to responding to emergencies and rebuilding lives.
“We are focused on both immediate relief and long-term recovery through the NEDC master plan designed to transform the region,” she explained.
The Chairman of Bama Local Government, Alhaji Ali Guja, together with community leaders, expressed gratitude for the prompt response, pledging that the items would be used judiciously.
Relief materials distributed included bags of rice, cartons of vegetable oil, pasta, blankets, men’s clothing, women’s wrappers and rubber mats.
The intervention follows mounting concerns over the safety of resettled communities in Borno as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters intensify attacks on villages and security formations in recent weeks.
