The minds of members of the Delta State House of Assembly appear made up over the impeachment of their speaker, Mr Monday Igbuya, as the intervention of the state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has hit the rocks.
The lawmakers were said to have insisted that the impeachment has to stay in spite of pleas from the state governor.
Tribune Online, however, gathered that the impeachment saga has attracted the attention of returnee former governor of the state, Chief James Ibori and other leaders in the state are said to be pleading with the membership to rescind their decision.
The former speaker was booted out of office early Thursday over alleged high-handedness, misappropriation of funds, double-standards, incompetence, questionable leadership styles as well as other impeachable offences.
His impeachment was reportedly followed by a three-month suspension from the House.
The quasi-coup was executed by 22 out of 29 members of the House who sat at an odd hour of 7:00a.m as against the normal sitting hour of 10:00a.m.
The impeachment sitting was superintendent by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Friday Osanebi While Mr Johnson Erijo (Isoko South II) moved the motion for the impeachment and was seconded by Peter Onwusanya (Oshimili South).
The impeachment motion was unanimously adopted by all 22 members present at plenary.
After the speaker was impeached, the majority leader, Mr. Tim Owhefere was also removed by the House and replaced with Mr Johnson Erijo, representing Isoko South Constituency II.
Owhefere’s removal followed a motion by Onwusanya and seconded by Mr Peter Uviejitobor (Udu constituency).
Meanwhile, armed police personnel have reportedly mounted surveillance at the state House of Assembly complex to avert breakdown of law and order.
