The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, pledged the support of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for a new federal initiative to provide affordable housing for police officers across the country.
According to a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP gave the assurance when he received the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The minister, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaib M. L. Belgore, and senior officials of the ministry, disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved a landmark programme that would deliver thousands of housing units to police personnel nationwide.
Dangiwa also proposed the creation of a National Task Force, to be drawn from relevant ministries and agencies in collaboration with the police, to safeguard federal assets.
He said the task force would address the growing problem of encroachment on government lands, which has stalled several critical development projects.
According to him, “The President has graciously approved a landmark housing initiative that will deliver thousands of housing units to police officers across the country,” Dangiwa stated, commending the police for their professionalism, resilience, and service to the nation. He added that better welfare through housing would further enhance the effectiveness of the force in protecting lives and property.
In his response, Egbetokun described the housing initiative as a timely intervention, noting that affordable housing remains one of the most pressing welfare needs of police officers.
“Welfare is central to the operational effectiveness of police personnel, and adequate, affordable housing is a vital part of welfare,” he said.
The IGP assured the minister that the police would give full support to the housing scheme and the proposed task force, stressing that reclaiming encroached federal government lands was a matter of urgent national importance.
“The Nigeria Police Force will continue to work hand in hand with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, and other relevant stakeholders, to ensure the success of these initiatives in the interest of national development and the well-being of Nigerians, including police personnel,” he said.
The Force, the statement added, remained committed to professionalism, excellence, and service to the nation, while ensuring the welfare of its officers and men remains a priority.
