The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has approved a N10 million payment to the families of five police officers who died in a motor accident on the Zaria-Kano Expressway.

The accident occurred on September 24, 2024, while the officers were returning from election duties in Edo State.

A statement by the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that 11 officers were also injured in the accident. Eight have been discharged, while three remain hospitalized.

Adejobi stated, “In response to this tragic event, the Inspector-General of Police has taken decisive action to provide support to those affected by approving compensatory payments of N10 million to the families of the deceased, acknowledging their profound loss and offering assistance during this difficult period.

“The IGP has also approved the payment of N2 million to those still receiving treatment, ensuring they receive the necessary medical support as they recuperate, and N500,000 to those who have been discharged after treatment.”

Adejobi added that the IGP had pledged ongoing support for officers and their families whenever needed, saying, “The IGP reaffirms the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to supporting officers and their families during trying times. The IGP once again expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and prays for the quick recovery of those still receiving medical care.”
