Father of Ifedolapo Oladepo, a youth corps member who died in Kano State, Mr Olawale Oladepo, on Monday, in Osogbo, described as untrue claims by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) that his daughter died of kidney infection, contending that the position of the agency was a grand plot to cover up for its negligence.
He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Comrade Solomon Dalung, to order against making inflammatory statement that could further traumatise the parents and family members of Ifedolapo.
Addressing a press conference in Osogbo, Osun State capital, Oladepo, who hails from Ila Orangun, in Ila Local Government Area of the state, said it was absolutely wrong for the minister to have exonerated the NYSC of culpability in the death of his daughter, a first class graduate in Transport Management from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).
Apparently reacting to President Buhari’s order that Ifedolapo’s death should be thoroughly investigated, Dalung had given an indication that the remains of Ifedolapo will be exhumed for autopsy to confirm the actual cause of the death while in NYSC orientation camp.
According to the bereaved father, “Dolapo nursed no ailment before she departed home for Kano at about 6:00a.m. on Thursday, November 24 and called at regular intervals along the journey till she got to Kano around 1:00a.m. the following day and headed straight for the NYSC Orientation camp with two other friends.
Expressing shock over the sudden death of his daughter, Oladepo wondered how a person who participated actively and appeared so radiant in all the pictures she sent home could, according to the medical certificate of the cause of her death issued by Gwazo General Hospital, died of kidney infection.
The bereaved father, who gave vivid account of all the activities of his daughter to the point of death, insisted that Ifedolapo’s death was caused by the negligence and lackadaisical attitude of the NYSC, saying that “NYSC should come out with a detail account of what happened to his daughter between 8:00a.m. on Monday that she reported to the camp clinic and the time she passed on at 4:00:p.m. the second day.
Oladepo stated, “the death certificate issued by the Gwazo General Hospital, Kano said she had sepsis that led to kidney infection. I wonder if truly she had kidney infection. Did the camp have proper medical facilities to have kept her, and why taking her to the General Hospital with no facilities to treat such ailments?”
He, however, lauded the efforts of President Buhari over his directive for thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of his daughter, assuring that his family was ready to cooperate with the government.
