The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has inaugurated a new executive leadership for its Sokoto and District Society, reinforcing its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and national development.
The investiture ceremony, held on Saturday in Sokoto, witnessed the formal handover of leadership to Alhaji Ganiyu Mustafa, ACA, who becomes the 6th Chairman of the District Society. He succeeds Ismail Suleiman, who was widely applauded for his impactful tenure and service to the Institute.
Speaking on behalf of ICAN’s National President, Mallam Haruna Yahya, the Zonal Vice Chairman, Mallam Ibrahim Alkali, underscored the pivotal role district societies play in fostering professional excellence and community development.
“Our district societies are the heartbeat of ICAN’s national impact. They drive initiatives such as the Catch Them Young Programme, deepen ethical awareness, and nurture the next generation of finance professionals,” Alkali stated.
He charged the new executive to embrace innovation, enhance digital proficiency, and explore global partnerships, while highlighting the Institute’s ongoing reforms, including digitized examinations, the Small and Medium Practice (SMP) Academy, and international certification pathways aimed at boosting competitiveness.
In a goodwill message, the Sokoto State Government pledged sustained collaboration with the Institute. Representing Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Trade, and Industry, Bashir Abubakar, congratulated the new leadership and affirmed the state’s recognition of the critical role accountants play in governance and economic growth.
“We recognize the importance of chartered accountants in fiscal responsibility, transparency, and policy planning,” the Commissioner said. “The Sokoto State Government remains committed to supporting ICAN’s initiatives, especially in strengthening financial literacy and empowering MSMEs.”
The outgoing chairman, Mr. Ismail Suleiman, thanked his executive team for their dedication, noting that the Society had recorded notable progress under his leadership. He urged young accountants to uphold ICAN’s core values of integrity, diligence, and continuous professional development.
The event, described by many participants as historic, attracted key figures from the finance sector, academia, and public service. It marked the beginning of a new era for the Sokoto District Society, with members expressing optimism about the future under the new leadership.
As the ceremony concluded, members were encouraged to remain active, uphold the Institute’s standards, and support initiatives that elevate ICAN’s stature nationally and globally.
“Together, we will build a future-ready ICAN, where excellence is a shared tradition,” he concluded.
