Ibadan is the next hub for entertainment —Fearless, R2fm OAP

His name ‘Fearless’ on R2FM, Ibadan is fast becoming a household one in the city as his radio show is gradually becoming the youth’s favourite in the city. ROTIMI IGE caught up with him recently and presents excerpts of their interaction.

Background

Fearless was born Olayemi Afolabi in Lagos. I had my primary and secondary education in Lagos before proceeding to Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho for his tertiary education where I studied Environmental Biology. The first of three children, I have two amazing sisters.

Your journey into broadcasting

The journey started unconsciously in JSS 1 when I was selected to spear head the orientation ceremony of my set in secondary school; Government College Ketu, Epe, Lagos. From then on, I was the go-to guy for news and debates for intra and inter school competitions; this feat earned me the senior prefect position in high school and spots on TV series such as Tinsel, Bella’s place and some short films while in the University.

Fast forward to NYSC in 2013, I was again the best choice to represent fellow corpers on the NYSC radio show in Umuahia, Abia State.  After service to the nation, I proceeded to the FRCN Training Academy in Lagos to brush my rough edges after which I joined Cool FM, Lagos as personal assistant to ace broadcaster Mannie, and then evolving to become a content-provider/co-host of MillerTime (now MusicBox) alongside DJ Xclusive and Kaylah.

R2fm is a youth centric station, what particular offerings do you have in store?

We have youth focused programming, game shows, up-to-date entertainment news and diverse music. For us, Ibadan is the latest hub of entertainment, being just a little above one hour drive from Lagos; it is not surprising that forecasters have predicted Ibadan as the next entertainment power house.

What inspires you

My inspiration is music and visuals. I pick a lot from what I see and hear far more than what I read.

Define good music

For me, it’s a sound you can identify with even without being familiar with it. A song you don’t mind listening to the end even though you’re hearing it for the first time. Something about the production or purity of the vocals just captures you.

Critics say Ibadan artistes have low self esteem and cannot measure up to Lagos acts

Sadly, it is true, but all that is changing as Ibadan is getting more visible on the entertainment map.

What will your station be doing differently seeing that there are over 20 stations in Ibadan?

First off, we are the one stop station for entertainment. We don’t go all core news or political, so when the heat of the politics and cliché gets to you and you feel a need to let your hair down, R2 FM is the place to be.

How did you get your radio name

(Laughs) My name is a constant reminder to myself that I need not harbour fear. The former me had a tendency to get jittery and intimidated, hence when I evolved, the name ‘Fearless’ came effortlessly.

How do you relax

I ride on hover-boards. I love outdoor games and fantasy, adventure movies.
