AN Ogun West Senatorial District aspirant under the All Progressive Congress (APC), Hon. Olusegun Gbeleyi has disclosed that he would sacrifice his senatorial seat ambition if Governor Ibikunle Amosun picked his successor from Ado-Odo Local Government Area of the State
Gbeleyi disclosed this while speaking at a media parley in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, on Monday.
It would be recalled that Governor Amosun had declared his intention to support the Ogun West people in producing his successor.
He said he had confidence in the Governor Amosun’s declaration to support the Yewa Agenda, saying it would be a thing of joy if one of his kinsmen emerged as the next Governor of the state.
Gbeleyi, a Consultant to Governor Ibikunle Amosun on Power said the state government would support the proposed bill that would criminalise Distribution Companies (Disco’s) estimated billing being proposed by the National Assembly.
He described the move as a good thing, saying it would go a long way in improving the power sector.
He explained that bill if passed would protect Nigerians who were customers as well as made the power providers more accountable and responsible.
According to him, in England, the customers have the right to sue the service provider if the service provider failed to inform them about the power outage and in return damage their things.
His words: ” I truly subscribe to it (bill) and support it. It will protect customers from estimated billing and also make service providers more accountable and responsible. In England, the customers have the right to sue the service providers as granted by the law if they take electricity without informing them and it spoilt their foodstuff”.
“Likewise, the service providers can sue customers if they bypass meters or steal their meter, it is vice-versa. It should be imputed in the bill”.
He lamented the maintenance culture of the power sector, saying some of the distribution cables, lines are “archaic and old” and this, he was affecting the sector.
“The distribution lines are archaic, old. Only God knows when they have done it. In England, Manchester precisely they are changing from their underground pipes because they get rotten and they can cause poison but here we don’t have that culture. All the cables and lines have a lifespan.
He declared ” We need those who are committed to be in government and channel the resources to where necessary and this is good for Nigeria”.
The former lawmaker who is also a member of British Association of Journalists (BAJ) said however that the liberalisation of independent power provider has relieved pressure on the national grid.
Gbeleyi who optimistic about improvement in power supply in the country disclosed that within 18 months and 24 months there would much improvement in the electricity supply.
The former Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly also advocated for a Parliamentary System of Government, which he said gives room for more accountability in government than Presidential System.
He stressed that if genuinely the country’s administration is transparent and accountable, the nation had enough wealth that can go round to all and sundry.
Gbeleyi said he was in the race in order to consolidate on the rebuilding mission of present administration in the state, adding that he will unlock his international connections for the benefit of the State.
” To use the position at the Senate to consolidate on the rebuilding mission to unlock opportunities for the youth, for women empowerment and for social welfare to the elderly. To be in the forefront of legislation that will benefit the good people of Ogun West,” he added.
