Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) is one of the unions holding sway at the country’s aviation sector.
According to its name, those qualified for the membership of the association are the senior management workers across the various aviation agencies and other companies.
As the association will be holding its election to elect new principal officers to run its affairs for the next two years, one of the candidates vying for the position of the topmost position, the national president, Comrade Danjuma Ahmed has promised to take the association to greater heights during his tenure.
Danjuma whose largest part of the two and a half decades he has been in the sector has been dedicated to unionism, attributed his desire to run for the national president of ATSSSAN to his desire to better the lives of members of the association across the government and private organisations.
According to him; “As you know that the essence of unionism is to ensure a good working environment and a better welfare package for employees and also for the betterment of the organizations, so basically, the essence is just to ensure that you contribute your own quota towards the development of the sector and providing a better working environment and conditions of services for the employees of both the government agencies and the private sector.”
Danjuma while declaring that he was more than qualified for the position in view of the wealth of experience gathered while holding various positions ranging from assistant secretary, secretary to the vice chairman of the national trustee of ATSSSAN, declared that he had more than what it takes to reposition the Union.
The labour leader who used the opportunity to identify human capital development as one of his would be priorities if elected, said he will use his position to ensure senior workers at the different government agencies and the private companies will not only enjoy training but equally enjoy the stipulated civil service succession policy.
“One of my major cardinal points for desiring to vie for the position is, human capital development. I want to introduce a situation whereby union leaders particularly executives are trained and well groomed to carry out their responsibilities, so that when you are discussing with the management, you will be in a position of knowledge to bargain for a better welfare package for our people and at the same time to also impact good services for the growth of the different organisations.”
When the organizations grow, your welfare can be taken care of.
“You need to have the capacity to better the lot of your organization. When these are in place, the national ATSSSAN will not have much crisis to deal with because the ATSSSAN branches can on their own discuss and negotiate to resolve issues with their managements without unnecessarily escalating issues and you can’t achieve this if you don’t have the knowledge. I want to urge all to be more alert and I want union leaders to be seen as partners in progress and not the type that will create tension between the organisations and the workers.
Danjuma while saying ATSSSAN and labour unions generally have a lot to offer in the sector said: “As a union, we have a lot to offer in the sector we operate and as union leaders we are suppose to be seen as drivers of the sector because every institution, every agency, every company is being driven by members of the Union, whether at the management level or at the lower cadre level, so the truth is for any company to progress, the working class there must be up and doing and as a member of ATSSSAN, I want my members wherever they are, to perform their duties diligently, you are expected to lead by example as executive members of the union. I will therefore, like the unions including ATSSSAN, National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP) to be the drivers of the sector in which they operate and the drivers of progress of every company they work and you can only do that when you have the capacity and the knowledge to do what you are suppose to do as a union leader.
“And I also want a situation where ATSSSAN will now be the champion, we are called senior services staff association it is expected that we lead, but we can only lead when we have the knowledge. My hope is that if at the end of the day we win the leadership of the Union, we want to make the difference; we want to show that we have arrived, that ATSSSAN has come to lead by the grace God.
“At the end of my service I want to see a vibrant, a progressive and highly articulate ATSSSAN. I want to be able to look back at the ATSSSAN Secretariat and see it glowing with people wanting to associate with ATSSSAN, happy to partner with it. I want to look back and see every of our members happy with the managements of where they are working and ultimately I want to leave behind a very progressive aviation sector.”
