Nigerian rapper CDQ has revealed that he walked away from a stable banking career to chase his passion for music.
Speaking in a recent interview on Echo Room, CDQ, whose real name is Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf, said he only became a banker to fulfil his late father’s dream but deep down, he knew it wasn’t what he was meant to do.
“I quit my bank job. I couldn’t tell my mother or any family member then. I left the house and went to stay with Masterkraft in the studio,” CDQ said.
“I told him banking isn’t my passion. I will probably just do it to make ends meet. But music is something that, whether it gives me a return or not, I’m still happy doing it.”
He recalled how, even during work hours at the bank, he was more interested in writing lyrics than completing tasks, a growing sign that the corporate world wasn’t for him.
CDQ shared that he confided in renowned music producer Masterkraft, a close friend who once lent him suits to wear to his banking job.
The producer, he said, was stunned when he heard CDQ had quit to focus solely on music.
CDQ’s bold move paid off in 2016 when his breakout single “Indomie” featuring Masterkraft and Olamide became a hit.
