‘I could have died’, skit maker Maraji opens up about family car accident

Nigerian comedian and skit maker Gloria Oloruntobi, popularly known as Maraji, has opened up about a harrowing car accident involving her entire family that led to her social media hiatus since June 2024.

In a recent YouTube video, the content creator reflected on the terrifying experience, revealing how it made her reassess the value of life and her work.

Maraji shared the details of the car accident that occurred while she, her husband, and their two children were returning from a church service.

The incident, which took place earlier this year, saw their family vehicle spin multiple times before ending up in a ditch.

“If you have ever been in a car accident, you know it feels like you are in between life and death,” Maraji recounted. “It feels like you could have just died.”

The skit maker expressed her deep fear during the ordeal, particularly because her entire family was in the car with her.

“What made it even scarier for me was the fact that everybody was in the car—my husband, myself, and my kids,” she said.

“We were coming back from church. It was just so scary and made me kind of think I could have just died.”

The comedian, known for her humorous skits on Instagram, said the experience prompted her to reflect on her life and priorities.

“If I had died, all the work I have done would just go. What is the point of working so hard if you will not rest?” she asked, adding that the accident made her appreciate life more and prioritise rest.

Describing the chaotic scene, Maraji likened it to a scene from a Nigerian movie.

“We were just driving when a car hit us from the side, and we were turning around. It was crazy. The car was just going around, and then we found ourselves in the ditch.”

Despite the severity of the accident, Maraji was relieved to find that no one in her family sustained any injuries. “I checked my kids, and they were okay. Everybody was just fine; nobody had any injury,” she said.

Maraji, who rose to fame on Instagram in 2016, married a Ghanaian man in a private ceremony in 2021. The couple has since welcomed two children, Jayden and Jordan.
