Hon. Chinwe Nnabuife reacts to local government autonomy

The recent Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to all 774 local governments in Nigeria marks a significant milestone in our democratic journey. This landmark judgment is not only a triumph for decentralization but also a vital step towards true democracy and grassroots development in our nation.

As a legislator representing the Orumba North and South Constituency in Anambra State, I, Hon. Princess Chinwe Nnabuife, am thrilled by this decision. The Supreme Court’s verdict, delivered on July 11, 2024, by Justice Emmanuel Agim, mandates that all funds due to local government areas (LGAs) be paid directly into their accounts, bypassing state governments. This ruling enforces Section 162(3) of our Constitution, ensuring that local governments can now independently manage their resources.

A New Era of Accountability and Development

This decision heralds a new era of accountability and transparency in local governance. By granting financial autonomy to LGAs, we are empowering them to address the unique needs of their communities more effectively. This autonomy means that local governments can now allocate funds directly towards improving education, healthcare, infrastructure, and other critical areas without state-level interference.

Relief for Legislators: Focusing on National Legislation

For us, as members of the Federal Government, this ruling also brings significant relief. With local governments now capable of managing their own funds, we can concentrate more on our legislative duties at the national level. This shift allows us to focus on creating robust policies and laws that will drive the nation’s development, rather than being bogged down by local financial management issues.

Empowering Citizens: Your Role in Shaping the Future

While this ruling is a victory, it is only the beginning. The real power now lies with you, the citizens. It’s time to take action and shape the future of our local governance.

The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of local government autonomy, ensuring that funds meant for local development go directly to where they are needed most. This ruling is not just a legal victory but a triumph for the Nigerian people.

Now, it’s our responsibility to make the most of this opportunity. Let’s elect proactive and committed leaders who will use these funds to improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure in our communities.

Citizens, your role is crucial. Attend meetings, ask questions, and demand transparency. Work hand-in-hand with your local government to create a brighter future. Together, we can transform our communities and build a nation where local governance truly serves the people.

Remember, this is our moment. Let’s embrace it with wisdom, courage, and a collective spirit. The power to shape our future lies in our hands. Let’s rise to the occasion and make Nigeria a beacon of democracy and development.
