Heartbroken Adamawa student commits suicide after breakup

A 24-year-old Mass Communication student at Federal Polytechnic Mubi, Jemima Shetima-Balami, reportedly took her own life after her boyfriend, believed to be a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University, ended their relationship.

She was in her second year of National Diploma and was doing an internship at Adamawa State Television in Yola.

Jemima, from Garkida town in Adamawa State, was found dead in her home near ATV Yola, where she was doing her internship. Her father, the one who found her, informed the police about the incident.

The state’s Public Relations Officer confirmed the suicide, mentioning that Jemima’s father reported it, and there were two versions of the story—one indicating a troubled relationship with the lecturer.

According to the officer, Jemima’s father reported her suicide, stating that she took a deadly substance. Another version suggested that she visited her boyfriend, a lecturer, who asked her to end the relationship. Upset by this news, she took poison.

He said, “The father of Jamima reported that she committed suicide by taking a deadly substance. Another version had it that she visited her boyfriend, a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University Yola, and was told to quit the relationship.

“Angered by the news from her boyfriend, the deceased took poison. We are investigating the matter, and justice will be served.”

The police are investigating the matter, emphasising that people should seek help instead of resorting to suicide, as it is considered an offence.
